Explorer Scouts
Explorers is our fourth section and has a core age range of 14-18. This is flexible so you could join shortly before your fourteenth birthday.
Our Explorers have a varied programme which they plan themselves, with the support of a leader. They develop skills for life by Taking part in activities such as canoeing, cooking competitions, radio construction and operation, bivvying and trips to national landmarks.
As an Explorer, you will also have the opportunity to attend a variety of international camps, such as the Scottish International Jamborette, the World Scout Jamboree and other, less regular camps. In the past couple of years, our Explorers have been to Spejderslejr in Denmark, Camp La-No-Che in the US and visited a Scout group in Gibraltar.
You’ll also be able to work toward a series of top awards, such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, the Chief Scout’s Platinum and Diamond Awards, the Queen’s Scout Award and the Explorer Belt.
Young Leaders
One of the unique things about the Explorer section is the Young Leader scheme. You’ll be able to volunteer with a younger section, working with the leader team to plan and run the programme – essentially being an adult volunteer. You’ll be supported with a training scheme designed specifically for Young Leaders and can challenge yourself with four missions, which range in difficulty from running some games at a section night or camp to planning and running an entire section meeting. It’s a great way to enhance your CV for applying for a job or to college or uni!
We have three Explorer Units in the district. The district-wide unit – Camus ESU – and Muirhead and Carnoustie ESUs.
